The specialist magazine "Science" has named the growth of renewable energies as the breakthrough of the year 2025. In the current year, energy generated from the sun and wind has begun to overtake energy production from fossil fuels in several areas.

"Since the Industrial Revolution, humanity has relied on fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas for energy production," the journal wrote on Thursday in a press release announcing the "Breakthrough of the Year". "However, 2025 marked a significant shift in this paradigm."

Renewable energy, led by solar and wind power, grew fast enough to meet the world's entire new electricity demand in the first half of the year. Renewables now supply more electricity worldwide than coal.

This change is being led by China. Its efforts in the expansion of solar plants, wind turbines and battery storage have made the country a global leader in this field.
