The mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem Imamoglu, has been targeted by the Turkish judiciary for the second time in a week. An investigation has been launched against the popular opposition politician, who is seen as a possible challenger to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in a future presidential election, the state news agency Anadolu reported. Among other things, he is accused of attempting to influence a court case.

The background to this is a press conference at which Imamoglu criticized ongoing proceedings against him and other opposition politicians as politically motivated. Among other things, he accused the government of always instrumentalizing the same court expert. An investigation had already been launched against Imamoglu last week after he criticized a senior public prosecutor who is leading several proceedings against opposition members.
A handful of people are trying to turn the judiciary into a political pawn "to please one person", said Imamoglu, referring to Erdogan. The real target, however, was himself. Imamoglu is facing a ban on political activity in other proceedings.
