Government business in the USA has been largely on hold for more than a month due to a budget dispute. The second month of the shutdown began on Saturday (local time). This could potentially break the previous record of 35 days - that is how long the budget freeze lasted at the turn of the year 2018/19. Donald Trump was also US President at the time. Experts believe it is quite likely that the current budget dispute could continue for weeks.

Since October 1, Republicans and Democrats in the US Congress have made no progress in negotiations on a new federal budget. Meanwhile, resistance to the budget blockade is growing among the population and satisfaction with the government is also declining.
On Friday, a federal judge temporarily ordered the Trump government to maintain state food aid for around 42 million Americans. An emergency fund is to be tapped for this purpose. The available funds were actually due to run out by the end of the month. The government must present its plans for the continuation of food aid by Monday. Low-income families, single parents and the elderly, who are dependent on monthly benefits from the so-called SNAP program, are particularly affected.
Meanwhile, according to polls, a majority of Americans blame the Republicans for the budget freeze. This could benefit the Democrats in the upcoming elections. On Tuesday, the new mayors of New York and New Jersey and the new governor of the state of Virginia will be elected. The results are seen as a mood test for the important congressional elections (midterms) in November 2026.
