The increased competition between the major powers in the Arctic, the intensified debates on international security and Greenland's independence have led to the spread of false information, especially in social media, warned the domestic and foreign intelligence services PET and FE in a joint assessment of the danger of foreign powers influencing the election.
The current situation could be used by foreign states to advance their own interests, the services wrote. American attention to Greenland and the spread of false information could be actively used by these foreign powers as disinformation.
Russia's conflicting interests
Russia was mentioned by name in the assessment: On the one hand, Russia has a strong interest in sowing division between NATO countries and weakening the West. On the other hand, greater US influence in Greenland is not in Russia's interests.
Greenland will elect a new parliament on March 11. In recent months, US President Donald Trump has repeatedly stated that he wants to gain control of the largest island in the world. He has also not ruled out military or economic coercion. In response, the Greenlandic government has repeatedly emphasized that it is working towards possible independence from the Kingdom of Denmark, but does not want to become part of the USA.
