He landed in the coastal city of Jeddah on the Red Sea, as the Ukrainian state foreign broadcaster Freedom confirmed on Telegram. A meeting with the crown prince and de facto ruler of the country, Mohammed bin Salman, is planned during the one-day visit.
A group of Ukrainian negotiators led by Zelenskyi's chancellery chief Andriy Yermak, Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha and Defense Minister Rustem Umyerov will stay longer in the Gulf state for talks with a US delegation led by Foreign Minister Marco Rubio.
Zelenskyi will not take part in the talks between representatives of the USA and Ukraine planned for Tuesday. The evening before, the President said that Kiev was hoping for results that would bring peace closer and lead to the continuation of US support.
Ukraine has been resisting a Russian invasion for more than three years with Western help. The USA recently paused its support for Ukraine and restricted the transfer of intelligence information. Washington wants to push Kiev towards a peace solution more quickly. In contrast, the US administration has refrained from exerting further pressure on Moscow.
Saudi Arabia is also under discussion for a possible summit between US President Donald Trump and Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin. There is no timetable for this yet. The two agreed to resume relations in February. Shortly afterwards, the foreign ministers of both countries met in Saudi Arabia to discuss a possible end to the war in Ukraine.
