US President Donald Trump had asked Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin for leniency for allegedly encircled Ukrainian soldiers in the Kursk region. Putin agreed, but demanded that Kiev order the soldiers in the Kursk region to lay down their arms and go into captivity. The information on the situation in Kursk cannot be independently verified.
According to Selenskyj, the operation is continuing in certain areas of the Russian region of Kursk. The troops are carrying out their tasks exactly as required. Thanks to the soldiers in Kursk, a considerable number of Russian forces have been withdrawn from other areas, he wrote.
He did not comment on the situation in the city of Sudzha in the region. A map published by the Kiev General Staff in the morning showed a withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the city. The Moscow Defense Ministry had already announced the recapture of Sudzha on Thursday.
Ukraine expects attack on Sumy
Addressing Ukraine's partners, Zelensky wrote: "It is clear that Russia is prolonging the war." The Russian army is amassing forces on the eastern border, which indicates that it intends to attack the Ukrainian city of Sumy. The accumulation of Russian forces shows that Moscow intends to continue ignoring diplomacy.
Ukraine has been defending itself against the Russian invasion for more than three years with Western help.
