According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the Russian troops' number one goal remains the rapid capture of Pokrovsk. "According to our data, there are 314 Russians in the city itself," the head of state told journalists in Kiev. That is more than last time. There had been 220 Russian assaults in the area of the mining town in the Donetsk region within three days. At the end of October, Selensky himself had spoken of "up to" 200 Russian soldiers in the Pokrovsk area.

A large Russian group had been gathered around Pokrovsk. "It is very important for Russia to do everything it can to conquer Pokrovsk for real," explained Zelensky. Moscow wants to show the USA that it is successful on the battlefield and can conquer the Donbass industrial region in eastern Ukraine. However, despite constant attacks, the Russian troops had "no successes" in the cities of Siversk, Kramatorsk and Kostyantynivka, which are also located in the Donetsk region.

Ukraine contradicts Moscow's account

In the neighboring Kharkiv region, on the other hand, there have been territorial gains for the Ukrainian side. "Kupyansk - we have advanced 1,100 to 1,200 meters," said Selensky. The situation near the city of Vovchansk near the Russian border is deteriorating and the Kremlin troops are preparing further advances.

Ukraine has been resisting the Russian invasion with Western support for more than three and a half years. Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin has repeatedly stated that Ukrainian troops are encircled in the cities of Pokrovsk and Kupyansk. Zelensky and the Ukrainian General Staff have always denied this. Kiev has occasionally been criticized for its failure to issue an order to withdraw from Pokrovsk and the neighbouring city of Myrnohrad.
