Following the heavy Russian missile strike against the city of Sumy in north-eastern Ukraine, the death toll has risen to at least 31. President Volodymyr Zelenskyi announced on Telegram in the early afternoon that two children were among the dead. He expressed his condolences to the relatives. Many children were also among the more than 80 injured. "Everyone will receive the help they need," he said.

Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko had previously spoken of at least 21 dead. Many people were also injured in the middle of the street, in cars and public transport as well as in houses, he said on Telegram. Klymenko accused Russia of a targeted attack on civilians.
