The US Senate has confirmed the controversial former governor of Arkansas, Mike Huckabee, as US ambassador to Israel. He was elected by 53 votes to 46, with all but one Democrat voting against him. Huckabee has been criticized for granting Israel the right to annex the West Bank and Gaza Strip, according to "The Hill" newspaper.

Israel's far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich congratulated Huckabee. This is wonderful news for the Israeli people, he said.

Huckabee was governor of Arkansas from 1996 to 2007. In 2008, he ran as a presidential candidate for the Republican nomination, but was unable to prevail against John McCain. In 2016, the former pastor made a second attempt, but after a short time supported Donald Trump.
