The US Senate has confirmed former Oklahoma state senator Markwayne Mullin as the new US Secretary of Homeland Security. The senators voted in favor of the 48-year-old by a majority of 54 to 45. The Republican had previously been a member of the US House of Representatives for ten years and a senator for three years.

At the beginning of the month, US President Donald Trump surprisingly dismissed Kristi Noem as Secretary of Homeland Security and nominated Mullin as her successor. Noem - once Trump's preferred candidate for the post - had become known for her aggressive approach to deportations. Most recently, she came under fire for the rigorous operations of the immigration authority ICE, which is part of the ministry. At the beginning of the year, two US-Americans also died as a result of fatal shots fired by law enforcement officers - ICE was also involved here. She was also incriminated by her public image, a multi-million dollar advertising campaign and an affair with her advisor.

Mullin is regarded as a bridge builder and skillful negotiator. He wants to adopt a more moderate tone than his predecessor. In a pre-confirmation hearing, he said that although he is friends with Noem, the two have different leadership styles. He needs to find a solution for how he can enforce Trump's tough deportation policy without incurring the displeasure of the US population.
