The Senate has set the course for the publication of the investigation files on the case of the deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The Democratic minority leader, Chuck Schumer, requested the consent of his chamber of parliament on Tuesday evening (local time) so that the bill, which had just been passed by the House of Representatives, could be waved through without delay.

Schumer used a procedure called "unanimous consent". This allows the Senate to pass a bill through the chamber without a formal vote, provided that no senator raises an objection. It is therefore quite possible that the text will soon land on US President Donald Trump's desk. However, he still has to sign the bill into law.

Hours earlier, Republicans and Democrats in the House of Representatives had voted in favor of publishing the Epstein investigation files with only one dissenting vote. Trump had previously spoken out against it, but then changed his mind at the weekend when it became clear what the result would be.
