The East African country of Rwanda has received its first deported migrants from the USA. The seven people had already arrived on August 16 and 17, a government spokeswoman said. She did not provide any further details, such as the nationality of the migrants.

The migrants are initially being accommodated in shelters run by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), although the IOM emphasizes that it neither supports nor facilitates the controversial deportations from the USA.
At the beginning of August, Rwanda agreed to take in up to 250 deported migrants from the USA. In July, the US government deported five convicted foreigners to the African kingdom of Eswatini.
Last week, the Ugandan Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the country would accept deported migrants from the USA under certain conditions. How many people will be involved and when the deportations are to begin remained unclear at first.
People with criminal records and unaccompanied minors would not be accepted. Uganda also favors the transfer of people from African countries, it said.
