A Palestinian was killed in an Israeli drone attack in Chan Junis in the south of the coastal strip, reported the Palestinian news agency Wafa. Several other people were injured.
The Israeli army spoke of an attack on "terrorists who were transporting ammunition in a way that threatened troops". One of them had been "eliminated". The previous day, several armed members of the Islamist terrorist organization Hamas had been killed in an incident in the north of the Palestinian territory on the Mediterranean.
Situation in Gaza remains unstable
A ceasefire has officially been in place in the Gaza Strip since October last year. According to the Hamas-controlled health authority, more than 780 Palestinians have been killed since then. Israel's army continues to control half of the area on the Mediterranean, while Hamas has been able to stabilize its control over the rest.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had promised a "total victory" over Hamas during the two-year war in Gaza.
The Israeli TV station N12 reported that an intelligence report sent to government representatives warned that Hamas had significantly strengthened its military and civilian structures during the ceasefire. Without a disarmament of Hamas, a relapse into the initial state is imminent. However, the group has so far rejected the laying down of arms envisaged in US President Donald Trump's Gaza peace plan.
