Several UN organizations are calling on the international community to take immediate action in view of the dramatically worsening humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip. A joint statement by the heads of six United Nations agencies, including the World Food Programme, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the World Health Organization, states that no commercial or humanitarian supplies have entered the territory for over a month due to the Israeli blockade.

"More than 2.1 million people are once again trapped, bombed and starving, while food, medicine, fuel and relief supplies are piling up at the crossings," the signatories warned. The organizations pointed to figures showing that over 1,000 children were killed or injured in the first week alone after the collapse of the recent ceasefire - the highest number in a week since the conflict began.

The healthcare system in the Gaza Strip is only partially functional and is on the verge of collapse. Vital medical and surgical supplies are in short supply, which threatens to undo the progress that has been painstakingly achieved. "We are witnessing acts of war in Gaza that show a complete disregard for human life," it continued. New Israeli evacuation orders had once again forced hundreds of thousands of people to flee - there was no longer a safe place.
