The left-wing nationalist Slovakian head of government Robert Fico has once again criticized the EU's Ukraine and Russia policy in a TV interview. In contrast to the basic tenor of most EU summits, he does not want Russia to be defeated, but rather to prevent another major war. The war in Ukraine is "not our war", he said.

The talks took place on the occasion of the annual commemoration of the Battle of Dukla Pass in 1944, which heralded the liberation of Slovakia from Nazi rule by the Red Army. This was the largest and bloodiest battle on the territory of present-day Slovakia during the Second World War, with the attacking Red Army paying by far the heaviest toll. That is why it is wrong to remove more and more monuments to fallen Soviet soldiers.
He was shocked by "how frivolously war is being talked about again today rather than peace", said Fico. "At EU summits, people are talking about how to defeat Russia. I don't know if these people are aware of what war means. Perhaps someone should come and tell the public more about what terrible suffering it was back then." He warned that this must not happen again and promised his voters that he would never allow Slovakia to be dragged into a "war adventure" as long as he was prime minister.
