CSU leader Markus Söder has clearly rejected a recommendation by US Vice President J.D. Vance on coalitions with the AfD. "We take every opinion seriously, but we will decide for ourselves who we form a coalition with," said the Bavarian Minister President on the fringes of the Munich Security Conference when asked by journalists. To date, the CDU and CSU have always categorically ruled out cooperation or even a coalition with the AfD.

Criticism: Europe's heads of government are afraid of their own people

Söder was reacting to a statement by Vance. In an interview with the "Wall Street Journal" before the Munich Security Conference, he had stated that he would urge German politicians to work together with all parties, including the AfD. He and US President Donald Trump feared that European heads of state and government were somehow afraid of their own people, Vance also said.

Söder: Don't moan about US plans, but don't submit either

With regard to German-American cooperation, Söder emphasized that Germany would "not moan about new plans" by the USA, "but we will not submit either and we recommend working together rather than going it alone". Regarding the future of American troops in Germany, Söder said, "We are very happy to have them with us and would like to keep them".
