The Islamists first detonated car bombs before heavily armed fighters attacked the bases from several directions, a military spokesman said. The attacks on two bases were repelled. The third, an attack on a military camp near the strategically important town of Aaden-Yabal, resulted in casualties. More than 20 soldiers were also injured.
According to the government spokesman, more than 130 Islamists were killed in the fighting.
Al-Shabaab, on the other hand, reported more than 100 soldiers killed and numerous weapons captured via the militia's radio station. The claims of both sides cannot be independently verified.
The Islamist Al-Shabaab militia has been fighting in the country on the Horn of Africa for years, but has also carried out terrorist attacks in neighboring countries such as Kenya and Uganda. The militia controls parts of Somalia, but also repeatedly carries out attacks in the capital Mogadishu against politicians, journalists and representatives of civil society who stand for a Western lifestyle.
