Somaliland's embassy is to be located in Jerusalem. This was announced on Platform X by Mohamed Hagi, the ambassador of the region, which is only recognized internationally by Israel. Somaliland declared its independence from Somalia in 1991, but was not recognized by any country until December last year. At that time, Israel recognized the Muslim-majority region in northern Somalia as an independent state. Several regional powers condemned Israel's move. Somalia firmly rejects the recognition of its breakaway region by Israel.

Israel's Foreign Minister Gideon Saar spoke on X of an important decision that was a "significant further step" in strengthening relations between the two countries. Somaliland is now the eighth country to have its diplomatic representation in Jerusalem.

The status of Jerusalem under international law is disputed. Israel describes the whole of Jerusalem as the country's "eternal capital", while the Palestinians lay claim to East Jerusalem as the capital of a future Palestinian state.
