Following the agreement on a huge financial package, the exploratory talks between the Christian Democrats and Social Democrats for a joint German government are entering the next round.

"We will discuss important issues together today," said SPD leader Saskia Esken before the start of the talks in Berlin. They will endeavor to sound out the issues as widely and thoroughly as possible "so that we can achieve good cooperation".

Esken did not say when a result might be reached. Both parties have agreed to maintain strict confidentiality regarding the content of the negotiations and will not disclose any interim results.

CDU/CSU chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz has named the federal budget, improving competitiveness, the citizens' income, improving internal security and limiting irregular migration as key points of the upcoming talks.

Merz, the winner of the federal election on February 23, wants to complete the formation of a government in Germany before Easter (April 20).
