A court in South Korea has ordered the release from custody of President Yoon Suk Yeol, who has been charged with attempted subversion and abuse of power. This was reported by the official news agency Yonhap. Yoon was arrested in mid-January.

However, the 64-year-old still has to answer for his actions in two proceedings: on the one hand, impeachment proceedings are underway at the Constitutional Court, and he is also accused in a criminal trial. If Yoon is found guilty, he could face a long prison sentence.

Yoon plunged South Korea into a deep crisis at the beginning of December

A verdict in the impeachment proceedings may be expected as early as the end of next week. If Yoon's impeachment is confirmed, new elections would have to be called within 60 days.

On December 3, Yoon declared martial law at short notice in the course of a budget dispute with the opposition, plunging his country into a deep national crisis. At the time, he accused the opposition of being infiltrated by communist forces, among other things. There is no proof of this.

The political turmoil has permanently damaged South Korea's international reputation and also slowed economic growth.
