This means that 75-year-old Han will return to his office as Prime Minister and also take over the official duties of suspended President Yoon Suk Yeol.
On December 3, Yoon declared martial law at short notice in the course of a budget dispute with the opposition, plunging his country into a deep national crisis. At the time, he accused the opposition of being infiltrated by communist forces, among other things. There is no evidence of this.
In the course of the national crisis, MPs also voted to impeach Hans on December 27. Among other things, the conservative politician was accused of having acted as an accomplice in the imposition of martial law by President Yoon. Han himself always denied this.
The Constitutional Court will also decide on the impeachment of suspended President Yoon in the near future. If Yoon's impeachment is confirmed by the Constitutional Court, new elections would have to be held within 60 days of the ruling. Otherwise, Yoon would return to the presidency.
It is expected that the judges of the Constitutional Court will possibly announce their verdict this week. However, an official date for the verdict has not yet been set.
