According to South Korea, North Korea has once again tested several ballistic missiles. According to the South Korean General Staff, the missiles were registered in the afternoon local time north of the North Korean capital Pyongyang. They are said to have flown around 350 kilometers.

The Japanese coast guard also reported that the projectiles flew eastwards into the Sea of Japan. So far, there is no information on the type and specific number of missiles fired.

Show of force before party congress

Both Tokyo and Seoul criticized the missile tests. The South Korean government called on North Korea to "immediately stop" such provocations. Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi also instructed her officials to gather information and ensure safety at sea and in air traffic. However, no damage caused by the missiles was reported.

South Korea's official news agency Yonhap described the missile launch as an "obvious show of force" by Pyongyang ahead of an important party congress. No official date has yet been announced for the important political event, but observers expect the 9th Congress of the Workers' Party of North Korea to take place in February.

According to several UN Security Council resolutions, North Korea is generally prohibited from firing ballistic missiles. According to Pyongyang, it last tested a hypersonic missile on January 4.
