According to a media report, North Korea has withdrawn its soldiers from the area around Kursk in the Ukraine war. "There have been no signs of North Korean troops stationed in Russia's Kursk region being involved in fighting since mid-January," South Korea's official Yonhap news agency quoted a report by the NIS news service as saying. Previously, both Ukrainian media and the New York Times had reported the alleged withdrawal of North Korean soldiers.

According to the NIS, heavy losses appear to be one reason for this. However, investigations into the exact background are still ongoing. In mid-January, the NIS estimated that around 300 North Korean soldiers had been killed and a further 2,700 injured in battles around the Kursk region.

North Korea has provided Russia with around 12,000 soldiers to fight against Ukraine since the fall. The NIS has been cooperating closely with the Ukrainian secret service ever since.
