Former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, who is currently in custody, has been charged with further offenses. The special prosecutor's office is now accusing Yoon of supporting a hostile state, among other things, according to a statement.

The 64-year-old is alleged to have attempted to provoke a military conflict between South and North Korea with the help of a covert drone operation. This was an attempt to legitimize the martial law he briefly imposed last December.

Yoon has already been in custody for several months. Among other things, he is accused of high treason - a criminal offense punishable by life imprisonment.

On December 3, he unexpectedly declared martial law, plunging his country into a deep national crisis. He also justified this radical step by claiming that the left-wing opposition had been infiltrated by communist and anti-state forces. He did not provide any evidence for these accusations.

The left-wing politician Lee Jae Myung is now President of South Korea. After Yoon's impeachment in April, he won the early presidential election in early June.
