At its party conference, the SP rejected the planned change to the system of residential property taxation. According to the Social Democrats, this would lead to tax losses of at least CHF 1.7 billion for the federal government, cantons and municipalities.

On Saturday in Brig VS, the delegates spoke out clearly against the change to the system of residential property taxation and against the introduction of a property tax on second homes. The vote on this is expected to take place in September. According to the SP, the change in the system would create additional injustice for renters and once again privilege property owners.
The change to the residential property tax system would also introduce an untested and opaque property tax, it added. This is supposedly intended to compensate for the massive tax losses in the mountain cantons. According to the Social Democrats, however, the mountain cantons also reject this tax.
If the property tax is rejected, the change to the property tax system will also be off the table due to the link between the two proposals.
