The Supreme Court has ordered Spain's former transport minister José Luis Ábalos to be remanded in custody as part of criminal proceedings on corruption charges. The former advisor to the socialist politician, Koldo García, must also be remanded in custody, as the judiciary also announced. In both cases, there is a risk of absconding, it said. The court decision is a further setback for the left-wing minority government under Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, which is under pressure due to various corruption scandals.

The prosecution accuses Ábalos and his ex-advisor of corruption in connection with the purchase of protective masks during the coronavirus pandemic. The public prosecutor's office is demanding up to 24 years in prison for Ábalos, who previously also held the position of managing director of the socialist governing party PSOE. His successor in the post, Santos Cerdán, was only released last week after more than five months in custody. He is the subject of criminal proceedings on allegations that construction contracts were awarded to certain companies in return for concealed payments.
