British Prime Minister Keir Starmer fears a further escalation of the conflict following Israel's decision to capture the city of Gaza. "This measure will do nothing to end the conflict or release the hostages.

It will only lead to further bloodshed," said Starmer in a statement. Israel's government must reconsider its decision immediately, he demanded.
The humanitarian crisis in the region is worsening every day. "What we need is a ceasefire, an increase in humanitarian aid, the release of all hostages by Hamas and a negotiated solution," said Starmer. Hamas could play no role in the future of the Gaza Strip. Both sides must finally turn away from the "path of destruction" and take part in negotiations "in good faith".
Early this morning, the Israeli security cabinet approved a plan to capture the city of Gaza. According to media reports, Israel currently controls around three quarters of the largely destroyed coastal strip, which is home to around two million Palestinians.
