German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier will announce on December 27 whether he will dissolve the Bundestag and call a new election after Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) lost the vote of confidence. He made the announcement in Berlin.

The background to this is the break-up of Scholz's "traffic light" coalition of Social Democrats, Greens and Liberals in November. On Monday, Scholz lost the vote of confidence in the Bundestag, which is a prerequisite for the premature dissolution of parliament by the Federal President.

The parties are aiming to hold new elections on February 23. Regular elections in Germany would have been held on September 28. Opposition leader Friedrich Merz's Christian Democrats are far ahead in all polls.
