The powerful typhoon "Yagi" has hit the Chinese tropical island of Hainan with heavy rainfall and lashing winds. After "Yagi" ravaged the Philippines and claimed several lives, southern China is now on high alert. As reported by the state news agency Xinhua, around one million people have been brought to safety.
According to the report, "Yagi" has developed into a super typhoon over the South China Sea with wind speeds of more than 200 kilometers per hour. It is therefore likely to be the most severe storm in the region for ten years.
The foothills of "Yagi" have already been raging for hours on Hainan and the neighboring mainland province of Guangdong. The Chinese central government sent task forces to the region to lead the flood and typhoon prevention work. Almost 420,000 people were brought to safety in Hainan and around 570,000 in Guangdong, as reported by Xinhua.
Great concern in Vietnam
Previously, "Yagi" had already passed a considerable distance to the west along the southern Chinese coast. In the Chinese special administrative region of Hong Kong, there was heavy rainfall in places on Friday night, but no major damage was reported. Flights were canceled and most schools also remained closed on Friday.
In Vietnam, however, where the typhoon is expected to hit on Saturday, an alarm has been sounding for days. Numerous soldiers and aid workers have been deployed to respond quickly to the storm and its consequences. Four airports, including in the capital Hanoi, will be closed on Saturday as a precautionary measure.
The world-famous Halong Bay, with its thousands of limestone cliffs jutting out of the sea, could also be affected. The operators of boat tours for tourists have suspended them for the weekend as a precautionary measure. The German embassy warned of "life-threatening storm surges", flooding and landslides. Holidaymakers in the country should be extremely careful.
