The US Supreme Court has rejected an application by Ghislaine Maxwell, the convicted confidante of sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. As is usual in such cases, the judges did not explain why they decided not to hear her appeal.

The application was specifically about a legal question and not about the Supreme Court determining whether Maxwell was guilty or innocent.
It was about that question
Maxwell's lawyers wanted to know whether a promise made by the US Attorney's Office is binding for the entire country or only for the region in which the legal processing of a case in this context takes place. Specifically: According to Maxwell's side, it was about an agreement that Epstein is said to have negotiated with the Florida prosecutor's office in the 2000s and which included that no charges would be brought against potential co-conspirators. Maxwell, however, was convicted in New York. The lawyers' aim was to have it established in court that Maxwell should never have been convicted. They were unsuccessful.
Maxwell is in prison
Maxwell, the long-time confidante of US multimillionaire Epstein, was sentenced to 20 years in prison in 2022. According to the verdict, she had played a central role in setting up a sexual abuse ring for girls. She has been in prison ever since.
Financier Epstein, who had systematically abused minors over many years, committed suicide in his prison cell in 2019 at the age of 66, according to official figures. Years earlier, there had been a trial, the outcome of which many considered a scandal. The case was later retried - and Maxwell was convicted.
Epstein's death caused speculation in parts of US society because he had excellent contacts in American high society. Celebrities and billionaires came and went with him - even US President Donald Trump spent time with Epstein, as several party videos prove. During the election campaign, Trump had promised to disclose the Epstein files. Because he has not done so to date, he is under pressure - including from within his own camp.
