In the Greek port of Piraeus, dozens of employees boycotted the loading of a container because, according to the union, it contained ammunition for Israel.

They did not want to support the "deadly war machine of the state of Israel", announced one of the left-wing trade unions that had called for the protest action.

The container is said to have been delivered to Greece from North Macedonia. It was supposed to have been loaded onto a ship bound for the Israeli port city of Haifa, as reported by the TV station ERTNews. It initially remained unclear whether the container actually contained ammunition for Israel and what it contained. The trade unions did not provide any further details on the alleged contents of the shipment.

"We must not allow war material to be transported from the port of Piraeus to continue the genocide of the Palestinian people," said Markos Bekris, head of the ENEDEP trade union, which represents port workers. The protesters chanted "Freedom for Palestine!" and spray-painted "Murderers away from the port" on the container in question. According to the union, the container was ultimately not loaded.

Israel has been waging war against the Islamist terrorist organization Hamas in the Gaza Strip for more than a year as a result of the massacres of 7 October 2023 in southern Israel, which left around 1,200 people dead.
