According to the SVP, a third seat in the Federal Council in the 2027 federal elections is not an issue. "We stand by the current magic formula," said the party's campaign manager, Manuel Strupler, in an interview on Saturday.

Strupler did not give a percentage figure for the targeted voter share in next year's elections. It is clear that the party wants to make gains, said the Thurgau SVP National Councillor in an interview with "Schweiz am Wochenende". However, an additional seat in the Federal Council is not an issue, depending on the voter share. The newspaper asked him whether the SVP wanted to break the 30 percent mark.

According to an election poll published in October, this mark is within reach for the SVP. If the elections had taken place last fall, the SVP would have achieved a voter share of 30.4 percent with an increase of 2.5 points. This was according to an election barometer published by the Sotomo research center on behalf of SRG at the halfway point between the 2023 and 2027 elections. The online survey was based on information from around 32,000 voters between August 25 and September 11, 2025. According to Sotomo, the SP and the Greens were also among the winners.

The four parties with the most voters have been represented in the national government since 1943. The distribution of seats is determined by the magic formula, which was introduced in 1959. The SVP, SP and FDP each currently have two members of the Federal Council and the center one. In recent years, it has been questioned whether the magic formula still represents the voter shares. However, the formula has been retained.
