Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billström resigns. The 50-year-old from the conservative governing party The Moderates announced on the online platform X that he would be stepping down at the opening of parliament after the summer break on Tuesday.

It was with a mixture of melancholy and pride at what he had achieved that he informed Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson of this, Billström wrote. It was not an easy decision, but something he had been thinking about for some time. He would be leaving politics completely and thus also his seat in parliament. What he will do in the future is still open.

Billström was Minister for Migration and Asylum from 2006 to 2014 under the then Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt. He has been Foreign Minister since October 2022. Since then, together with Kristersson, he has spent a long time working on bringing his country into NATO. After prolonged blockades by Turkey and Hungary, Sweden was finally accepted as the 32nd member of the defense alliance in March of this year.
