Addiction Switzerland is calling for a change of course and massive investment in prevention. The foundation criticizes the fact that the federal government is cutting funding despite rising health insurance premiums and annual costs in the billions for addiction-related illnesses.

A study published in 2021 estimates the economic costs of addiction in Switzerland at around eight billion Swiss francs per year, as Addiction Switzerland stated on Thursday in its "Addiction Panorama Switzerland 2026". This sum includes the losses for companies and the costs for the healthcare system.

In addition, according to the foundation, more than 10,000 people in Switzerland die every year as a result of substance use. In total, tens of thousands are affected by addiction.

Despite this, prevention measures have to accept cutbacks. Every franc invested in prevention reduces costs, wrote Addiction Switzerland. The organization is calling for a "far-sighted strategy" in terms of prevention with the necessary resources.
