Birdwatchers counted a total of 10,084 chaffinches, 6,205 wood pigeons and 2,739 starlings, Birdlife wrote. The ornithological highlights included a strikingly high number of meadow pipits, hen harriers and ibises.
According to the organization, the count took place as part of the annual Euro Birdwatch campaign. More than 27,000 people in 34 countries across Europe took part and counted around 2.4 million migratory birds on their way to their wintering grounds.
According to the nature conservation organization, the campaign aims to raise awareness of the dangers of birds. Most migratory birds are insectivores. The extinction of insects has severely restricted their food source. The draining of wetlands, intensive agriculture and overbuilding have also destroyed many habitats and resting areas for migratory birds in Switzerland, Birdlife wrote.
