The Federal Council wants to completely renovate the Swiss embassy in London for CHF 96 million. This is set out in the Confederation's 2026 real estate dispatch, in which the parliament will be presented with commitment credits totaling CHF 773.8 million.

The building, which was constructed in 1971, is to undergo a comprehensive overhaul after more than 50 years of operation, the Federal Council wrote in a press release on Wednesday. The embassy in the British capital is one of Switzerland's most important representations worldwide.

However, the most important project in the 2026 real estate dispatch is the renovation and expansion of the National Library in Bern. It has been known for some time that this building from the 1930s has structural defects and needs to be renovated. The federal government plans to spend CHF 211.7 million on this project.

A total of nine credits

The Federal Council is submitting a total of nine credit lines to Parliament with the new Real Estate Dispatch. For example, the Federal Council also wants money for the conversion and renovation of the Bundesgasse 32 administration building in Bern (CHF 24.6 million) and the renovation of the Monbijoustrasse 40 administration and education building in Bern (CHF 66 million).

CHF 30.9 million is also to be spent on the construction of the new accommodation and training building in Magglingen near Biel and CHF 73.6 million on the construction of the new storage facility for the Federal Archives in Zollikofen BE.

A further credit commitment of CHF 170 million will be requested for projects under CHF 10 million that are not specified individually, for non-plannable or urgent property purchases and for the planning of future real estate embassy projects. Two further credit commitments relate to rents.
