Pro Natura has chosen the hedgehog as Animal of the Year 2026. The nature conservation organization wants to encourage politicians and private individuals to do more to protect the environment and hedgehogs.
The hedgehog has been considered "potentially endangered" in Switzerland since 2022, as Pro Natura announced on Monday. Cars, mowers and an excessive sense of order can be fatal for the animals. Hedgehogs, which specialize in insects, also lack food during the year and especially in winter.
Hedgehogs have been native to Switzerland for around 20,000 years. Since then, they have almost completely lost their original habitat in diverse agricultural areas. Hedgehogs have found a new home in the gardens and parks of villages and towns. According to Pro Natura, everyone can help to protect hedgehogs. With the "Bonjour Nature" project, the nature conservation organization is offering nationwide support from March 2026 for those who want to make their gardens more natural.
