Mobility Swiss apprentices need 80 to 90 minutes a day to commute

Swiss apprentices spend an average of around 80 to 90 minutes a day commuting to work or school. According to the Swiss Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (SFIVET), this is the result of the first study into the commuting times of Swiss apprentices.

As SFIVET announced on Monday, Swiss apprentices spend an average of 39 minutes commuting to work and 46 minutes commuting to vocational school. Taking into account the return journey, this amounts to an average of 78 minutes per working day and 92 minutes per school day.

Only just under one percent of apprentices completed an apprenticeship in another language region of Switzerland. Around 15 percent had a training company outside their canton of residence and around 11 percent had to attend a vocational school outside their canton in order to learn their trade.

According to the press release, the study shows that apprentices spend more time commuting than Swiss employees as a whole. According to SFIVET, their daily commuting time averages 59 minutes.

However, the commuting times of apprentices in the SFIVET study are based on travel times by public transport, while the mode of transport used by employees is known.

Data from 175,000 apprentices

For their statements on commuting times, the authors of the study linked data from the statistics on basic vocational training with data from the business and company register of the Federal Statistical Office. They analyzed the data for all of the approximately 175,000 apprentices who were undergoing basic vocational training in the 2021/22 school year.
