At 2 p.m., the bells of the national churches rang throughout Switzerland. The Federal Council and the Christian churches had invited the population to dedicate this moment to the memory of the deceased, solidarity with the injured and their families and thanks to all the emergency services.
The day of mourning was also celebrated at cantonal and local level. In Bern, for example, the Bernmobil streetcars and buses stopped for 20 seconds at 2 p.m. and activated their hazard lights in remembrance.
The accident was also addressed at schools in order to create space for sympathy and processing, for example at the Malleray BE school, where 40 candles were laid for the victims and 116 roses for the injured.
SBB also took part in the national day of mourning with various measures. The flags at the stations were flown at half-mast and announcements on trains drew attention to the minute's silence at 2 pm.
All regional airports controlled by Swiss air traffic control Skyguide, the two major airports in Geneva and Zurich Kloten and Payerne VD did not allow any take-offs during the minute's silence, a Skyguide spokeswoman told Keystone-SDA.
In Bern, the flags of the Federal Palace and federal buildings were flown at half-mast, as in many other places in Switzerland.
