Syria has a new government to continue the country's transformation after the fall of long-term ruler Bashar al-Assad. Transitional President Ahmed al-Sharaa presented a cabinet consisting of 22 ministers in the evening.

After a rebel alliance toppled Assad in December, a transitional government initially took over the affairs of state. The new government now wants to rebuild state institutions on the basis of "responsibility and transparency", said Sharaa.

A rebel alliance led by the Islamist Haiat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) took control of the Syrian capital Damascus on December 8. The ousted long-term ruler Assad fled to Russia.

The transitional government was led by the then head of government of the rebel stronghold of Idlib, Mohammed al-Bashir. The new government appointed by the Islamist Shaara includes a woman for the first time. Hind Kabawat was appointed Minister of Social Affairs and Labor. She is a Christian. A prime minister has not been appointed. Sharaa is expected to lead the work of the cabinet.
