Women in Syria are to wear burkinis or conservative swimwear on public beaches, according to new rules issued by the authorities. "On public beaches and shores, women are asked to wear conservative swimsuits (burkini or swimwear that fully covers the body)," said a statement from the Ministry of Tourism.

All beachgoers are encouraged to wear swimwear that respects "moral principles" and the feelings of all faiths. "Western swimwear" is still permitted in resorts and swimming pools.

Syria is currently led by a transitional government. It largely emerged from the Islamist group Haiat Tahrir al-Sham, which toppled Assad (59).

Since the takeover, the rights of minorities and women have been under particular scrutiny. Even in Assad's time, it was common for women to cover up on public beaches in Syria and to swim in burkinis.
