A few days before a special summit of the Arab League, politicians in Cairo discussed the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip. According to state media, Prime Minister Mustafa Madbuli said that Egypt's government had drawn up a plan to this effect following a meeting with his Palestinian counterpart Mohammed Mustafa. Cairo emphasized that the residents of Gaza must remain. The summit begins on March 4.

The future of the Gaza Strip is the subject of international debate. US President Donald Trump has floated the idea of taking control of the territory and resettling the Palestinian population in order to turn Gaza into a "Middle East Riviera". The proposal has met with fierce criticism. Israel wants to crush the Islamist Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip, while Palestinian representatives are pushing for reconstruction under their own administration. A solution is not yet in sight.
