In the capital Buenos Aires and other cities in the South American country, students, teachers and representatives of trade unions and the opposition took to the streets to demonstrate against the austerity policies of ultra-liberal President Javier Milei.
In Buenos Aires, people gathered in the Plaza de Mayo, the square directly in front of the seat of government. "Without education there is no future", banners read. According to the organizers, around 600,000 people took part in the protests in the capital and 1.5 million throughout the country, as reported by the newspaper "Clarín". The newspaper "La Nación", on the other hand, estimated the number of demonstrators in Buenos Aires at around 120,000.
The rallies demanded compliance with a law already passed by Congress on the funding of state universities, which are free of charge in Argentina. The government has filed a lawsuit against the law, as it does not specify where the designated funds are to come from. Instead, it is demanding more transparency and efficiency in spending. The decision now lies with the Supreme Court.
