The FDP wants to abolish integrated lessons and introduce requirements for German language skills. These are two of five proposals with which the party wants to reform schools. It speaks of a "rescue of the elementary school".

The FDP presented the package to the media on Friday. The party had already complained in the summer that school leavers were no longer able to do maths and read. The integrative school was failing those with learning difficulties as well as the gifted.

As a result, the party has developed a package that it calls a "toolbox to save the elementary school". Over 30 motions have already been submitted to the cantonal parliaments. The five most important demands of the Free Democrats include the abolition of integrated schools and the reintroduction of special classes. In addition, children should not be allowed to join mainstream classes until they speak sufficient German.

A ban on cell phones is also called for, as well as less bureaucracy and the "political neutrality" of schools.
