Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was shot dead on the sidewalk in New York.
Five days after the crime, the alleged perpetrator has been caught.
The crime not only reveals a divided country, but also the great hatred for the ailing US healthcare system.
The crime went around the world. On the street in the middle of New York, a man shot and killed 50-year-old Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, America's largest health insurance company.
The crime took place in front of one of the most famous luxury hotels and was filmed by surveillance cameras. The FBI and the New York police launched a manhunt for the perpetrator, images from the surveillance cameras were published and a reward of 60,000 dollars was offered for relevant information.

However, there was initially no trace of the perpetrator. For five days. Until a McDonald's employee recognized his face and informed the police.
The mugshot was published by the New York City Police Department shortly after the crime.

The employee can now look forward to the 60,000 dollar reward. But in the divided land of unlimited possibilities, an icy wind is blowing against him at the same time. The employee is called a "rat" and a "snitch". The fast food outlet in Altoona, where the suspected perpetrator Luigi Mangione was arrested, is covered in bad reviews. Google had to intervene and remove the relevant reviews. An entire Luigi Mangione community on Reddit was removed. Shortly after the murder, the perpetrator was referred to as "The Adjuster".

The crime not only reveals a deeply divided country. It also shows the anger of many Americans towards the ailing healthcare system. UnitedHealthcare is the largest health insurance company in America. The handwritten confession, which was recovered from the alleged perpetrator, specifically denounces the health insurance industry for greed. "These parasites deserved it," it says, according to police sources.
UnitedHealthcare has recently been involved in a number of scandals. For example, the health insurer is said to have deliberately underpaid doctors for services, which they passed on to patients. People suffering from cancer were denied life-saving or at least life-prolonging treatments and sick senior citizens were thrown out of nursing homes due to a lack of cover, writes the US correspondent for "Der Spiegel".
Hatred of the insurance company has not necessarily diminished as a result of the murder - on the contrary. Since the crime, personal horror stories have appeared on the internet targeting UnitedHealthcare. Another fact: the health insurer has the highest rate of claim rejections. At 32 percent, it is twice as high as the industry average.
15 years after the introduction of "Obamacare", the healthcare system in the USA is completely ailing. And hatred of the corporations has reached an unbelievable peak in New York.
