Thousands of people gathered in several Slovakian cities on Friday evening to protest against the government of left-wing nationalist Prime Minister Robert Fico. They accused it of authoritarian tendencies and a pro-Russian course. "The situation is critical!" warned speakers from the stands in Bratislava. In the second largest city, Kosice, Defense Minister Robert Kalinak was accused of "capitulating" to Russia. There were loud chants demanding the resignation of the government.

The rallies were called by the citizens' initiative "Mier Ukrajine" (Peace to Ukraine), which is campaigning against arms deliveries to Ukraine. The government in Bratislava insists on helping the neighboring country, but only with "non-lethal" goods. This includes demining equipment and generators. Slovakia also steps in with electricity supplies when Russian bombardments paralyze the Ukrainian supply.

Reproaches to demo organizers

Following similar rallies in recent weeks, Fico had already accused the organizers of spreading "lies" and manipulating people by claiming that the government was considering leaving the EU and NATO. President Peter Pellegrini also criticized the use of the slogan "Slovakia is Europe!" for the demonstration. This suggests that the government is questioning Slovakia's anchoring in the EU and Nato.

In its calls, the demonstration movement denounces verbal attacks by politicians from the government camp against artists and the media. Fico, in turn, accuses his opponents of wanting to overthrow a government legitimized by democratic elections.
