Thousands of Israelis have once again gathered to protest against the right-wing religious government and in favor of a Gaza deal. The rally in Tel Aviv was also directed against a highly controversial law that Israel's parliament had approved in the morning. According to critics, this is intended to allow more political influence in the appointment of judges. It is a central law in the controversial restructuring of the judiciary in the country, which Israel's leadership is pushing ahead with.
The demonstrators and legal experts in the country believe that this endangers democracy. The Supreme Court now wants to examine complaints filed against the approved law.
Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his allies have long accused the judicial system in Israel of being too powerful and interfering too much in the decisions of the executive.
In recent days, there have been repeated large anti-government demonstrations in the country. People are also demanding an agreement with Hamas so that the hostages still being held by Islamists can be released. "The government has given up the hostages. Not us", eyewitnesses said on posters at the rally in Tel Aviv. The demonstrators accuse Netanyahu's government of endangering the liberation and lives of the hostages by resuming the fighting in the Gaza Strip.
