Thousands of people are protesting in Tel Aviv and other places in Israel against the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. They recalled the hostages still being held in the Gaza Strip and accused Netanyahu's government of massively jeopardizing the liberation of the hostages with the resumption of fighting in the coastal strip.

Doron Steinbrecher, who was released from captivity on 19 January, said at a rally in Tel Aviv that she was "angry at those who think it is okay to fight again in Gaza" instead of adhering to the ceasefire agreed with the Islamist terrorist organization Hamas and freeing more hostages from the Gaza Strip.
At other rallies in the Israeli coastal metropolis, participants chanted: "We will not give up until all the hostages are back!" Numerous people also took part in demonstrations in Jerusalem. Hundreds marched to the residence of Prime Minister Netanyahu.
Resentment over the dismissal of domestic intelligence chief
The anger of the demonstrators was also sparked by the government's decision to dismiss the head of domestic intelligence, Ronen Bar. Israel's Supreme Court suspended Bar's dismissal for the time being on Friday. A judge issued a temporary injunction which, according to the court, will remain in place until a hearing on the matter has taken place.
Netanyahu emphasized that the government has the authority to dismiss the head of the Shin Bet. In a video distributed by his office, Netanyahu stated that he had lost confidence in Bar. The opposition criticized the incident and suspected other reasons for the dismissal. The Shin Bet is investigating alleged illegal relations between Netanyahu's confidants and Qatar.
