The "Committee against the reduction of SBB Cargo in Ticino" and the Ticino government are calling on SBB Cargo to carry out a "serious review" of its strategy for Ticino. In May, the company announced the reduction of 65 full-time positions, 40 of which will be eliminated in Ticino.

The government and the "Committee against the reduction of SBB Cargo in Ticino" are in agreement: the reduction of SBB Cargo in Ticino must come to an end. This was announced by Matteo Pronzini (Movimento per il socialismo), member of the Ticino cantonal parliament, at the request of the Keystone-SDA news agency. A meeting between the committee and the Ticino government took place in Bellinzona on Tuesday morning.

At the end of October, following a meeting with SBB management, the Ticino government had already expressed its displeasure at the decisions taken by SBB Cargo. As a public company, SBB could not act solely on the basis of economic criteria, stated Norman Gobbi (Lega), President of the cantonal government, at the time. In particular, this could not be to the detriment of minority regions and national cohesion.

Hardened fronts

At the meeting, SBB management announced that a solution had been found for all 40 employees in Ticino affected by the cutbacks in freight transport. SBB also announced further changes for staff.

The Ticino government called for the "immediate suspension" of any further staff reduction measures in Ticino until a political and technical dialog with the cantonal authorities and the social partners has been concluded.

The "Committee against the reduction of SBB Cargo in Ticino" is calling on SBB Cargo to invest in jobs in Ticino. This position will also be put forward to the SBB management, continued Grand Councillor Pronzini. Next Monday, the committee will meet with SBB CEO Vincent Ducrot and the Head of Freight Transport Alexander Muhm in Bern.
