The Ticino government has released a wolf in the Bedretto Valley for shooting. The animal had probably recently killed eleven sheep and lambs in the Cave delle Pigne area.

The shooting order is valid for 60 days and only within a perimeter defined by the Ticino Office for Hunting and Fishing, according to a government communiqué.

There are many other grazing goats and sheep in the upper Bedretto Valley that cannot be protected during the day with "reasonably enforceable protective measures". Shooting the wolf in question could prevent further damage to livestock, it continues.

According to the Ordinance on the Hunting and Protection of Mammals and Wild Birds, the canton can issue a shooting permit for individual wolves that cause significant damage to livestock.

As the government states in conclusion, damage to livestock is considered "significant" in particular if an animal has killed at least six sheep and goats within its normal radius of action within four months.
